How Do You Know If You Need Alcohol Addiction Treatment?
Alcohol addiction doesn’t always look the way you’d expect. Knowing the signs can help you decide when to reach out.
Signs Your Drinking Has Become a Problem
Not sure if your drinking has crossed a line? Here are some common signs:
- Drinking more, or for longer, than you meant to
- Struggling to cut back after trying
- Needing more alcohol to feel the same effect, or getting cravings when you try to cut back
- Feeling shaky, anxious, or sick when you stop
- Letting responsibilities slip because of drinking
Even a few of these deserve attention. Alcohol use often grows out of stress or emotional pain, which makes it harder to tackle alone.
When Is It Time to Ask For Help?
Sooner than you may think. You don’t need to hit rock bottom to deserve support.
Treatment can start as soon as drinking begins to affect your mental health or your relationships. Your work and quality of life matter here as well. Asking for help early can prevent problems from worsening.
No doctor’s referral is needed. You can contact us directly. If you’re unsure, call our admissions team to talk it through.
What Happens During Alcohol Detox?
Detox, or detoxification, is often the first step in alcohol rehab. It’s the part many people worry about most, and that’s understandable. Understanding what happens can ease some of that fear.
Is Alcohol Withdrawal Dangerous?
It can be. When you quit drinking after a period of heavy drinking, withdrawal symptoms can include tremors or sweating. Anxiety and nausea are common as well.
In severe cases, withdrawal can lead to seizures or confusion. Everyone’s experience differs. Symptoms depend on how much and how long you’ve been drinking. Stopping suddenly on your own can be risky, so supervision matters.
How The Harbour Program Supports You Through Detox
Our Harbour Program™ gives you a safe place to stabilize before the deeper work begins. Nurses supervise on site, and our team monitors your comfort and safety around the clock.
The first days without alcohol can feel disorienting, so our team stays close. There’s no pressure to have answers yet. You’ll have space to rest while your body and mind settle.
Your pre-admission assessment determines if you need detox. From there, you move into your wider treatment program feeling steadier and ready for what’s next.
Breakthrough doesn’t provide emergency medical services. If you’re having a medical emergency, call 911 immediately. Our admissions team is available 24/7 to answer your detox questions.
What Does Alcohol Rehab at Breakthrough Look Like?
Our residential programs give you time and space to heal, steps from Georgian Bay. Every plan is built around your own needs and goals. Our clinical team recommends a plan after your assessment.
How Long Are The Programs?
You can choose from four lengths of stay:
The 4-week North Star Program™ suits you if you need a focused reset without a long break from life. Days centre on individual and group therapy. You’ll build practical skills along the way.
Need more time? Consider the 6-week Guiding Light Program™. It goes deeper into trauma and emotional patterns. Six weeks gives trust more time to form. You’ll build emotional regulation skills and work on anxiety or depression if needed.
The 8-week Lighthouse Program™ is our most immersive option. It includes family involvement and holistic practices. This program suits people with a deep, complex history. Eight weeks lets our team move at a pace that respects that complexity.
A 12-week program is also available for people who need more time. Your clinical team will recommend it if your assessment points that way.
The Voyage Program
Recovery doesn’t stop when you leave the centre. The Voyage Program™ offers hybrid care on a 2-weeks-in, 2-weeks-out model. You stay connected to your clinical team through secure virtual sessions, so therapy and recovery coaching stay consistent.
Family therapy and holistic wellness stay part of your plan. The relationships you build during your stay carry forward.
Therapies You Can Expect
Our team offers these evidence-based therapies:
- CBT: helps you spot and change thought patterns that fuel drinking
- DBT: builds emotional regulation and coping skills
- EMDR: helps you process distressing memories
- Somatic therapy: works with how stress shows up in your body
- Art therapy: gives you another way to express what’s hard to face
Together, these therapies help you work through the stress and trauma that often drive drinking.
Remember: a trauma specialist is on staff. That said, you won’t have to share your whole story before you’re ready.
Can You Treat Alcohol Use and Mental Health Together?
Yes, and treating both often makes recovery stronger. Many people who struggle with alcohol also live with a mental health condition. The two often feed each other. It makes treating them separately harder. Fortunately, you don’t have to choose which one to address first.
What Counts As a Concurrent Disorder?
Concurrent disorders are mental health conditions that exist alongside substance use. Trauma and anxiety are common examples. Since drinking often starts as a way to cope with that pain, addiction doesn’t come from a lack of willpower.
How Breakthrough Treats Both
Our approach is both trauma-informed and holistic. We treat the underlying mental health concerns that fuel your drinking, along with the drinking itself. Therapies like CBT and DBT help you build emotional regulation skills and healthier ways to cope.
Over time, you gain deeper self-awareness and stability. This way, your recovery rests on real understanding of what drives your drinking. The goal is a steady, purposeful life after treatment.
Who Can Attend, and How Does Insurance Work?
Questions about eligibility and cost can hold people back from reaching out. Let’s clear them up so you can focus on getting well.
Do You Accept Clients From Outside Ontario?
Yes. Adults 18 and over from across Canada can attend. International clients aren’t accepted.
Coming from another part of Canada? Our team can help coordinate your airport transportation. You cover the cost of the trip.
Does Insurance Cover Alcohol Rehab?
It can, depending on your plan. Breakthrough is a private-pay centre, and OHIP doesn’t cover treatment here.
We accept some private insurance plans and can provide forms for you to submit to your insurer. We don’t assist with verifying coverage, so contact your provider to confirm what your plan includes.
Keep the receipts and the forms we provide so you can submit your claim. Not sure what to ask your insurer? Start with these questions:
- Does my plan cover residential addiction treatment?
- Is there a coverage limit or a maximum number of days?
- Do I need pre-approval before I start?
- What paperwork will you need from the centre?
- Does my plan reimburse me after I pay?
- Do I need a doctor’s note for my claim?
Worried about cost still? Not to worry; installment plans are available. Our admissions team can answer any payment questions.
How Do You Get Started?
Reaching out can feel like the hardest step, but you don’t have to take it alone. Call our admissions team to begin.
After a confidential clinical assessment, we recommend a personalized plan. We aim to admit you within 24 to 48 hours. Then our team helps you plan your admission and arrival in Wasaga Beach.
Families can find support through Bridge Sessions™ and Circle of Healing™. Our team meets you with warmth and respect from the first conversation.
Frequently Asked Questions About Alcohol Rehab in Ontario
Is residential treatment the right setting for alcohol addiction?
For many people, yes. Inpatient treatment at a residential treatment facility removes you from the environment where drinking happens and gives you daily structure, medical supervision, and talk therapy in one place. Outpatient treatment, intensive outpatient programs, partial hospitalization, or a brief intervention through your family doctor suit people with milder alcohol use disorders or strong support at home. Breakthrough offers residential rehabilitation and the hybrid Voyage Program; we don’t run a standalone outpatient program. Your assessment helps us tell you honestly which treatment options fit your situation.
Are medications used in alcohol addiction treatment?
They can be. Medications such as naltrexone, acamprosate, and disulfiram are approved in Canada for alcohol use disorder and are prescribed by a doctor or other health care professional. Alcohol withdrawal management in our Harbour Program is nurse-supervised. If you’re already taking a medication, tell our admissions team during your assessment so medication management can be built into your treatment plan.
Do you use 12-step programs or support groups?
Mutual-support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous and SMART Recovery, along with group counselling during treatment, give many people a support network that lasts long after treatment ends. We encourage you to find the peer support that fits you, and we help you connect with groups near home as part of your aftercare planning.
What if I’m worried about being judged?
Stigma keeps a lot of people drinking in isolation for years. Alcohol addiction is a medical condition, not a moral failing, and our centre is a non-judgmental space from the first phone call. If calling a centre feels like too much right now, a helpline, peer support, or online therapy can be a lower-pressure first step. Harmful beliefs about what it means to need help are often part of what therapy untangles.
How do I prepare for treatment?
Start by calling admissions for a confidential conversation. We’ll complete an assessment, build an individualized treatment plan, and tell you what to bring. Let your support system know your plans, arrange time away from work, and bring any prescriptions and your insurance forms. If a social worker or counsellor is already involved in your care, let them know too. A little preparation makes the first days easier.
How can my family support me through recovery?
Family involvement improves outcomes. Family therapy through Bridge Sessions helps family members repair trust and communication, and Circle of Healing supports loved ones with their own recovery. Families also play a role in continuity of care after you return home.
How do you help prevent relapse after I leave?
Relapse prevention strategies support long-term recovery and run through every program. You’ll learn to recognize triggers, build coping skills, and practise accountability with your recovery coach. Aftercare support continues after your stay, and if a setback happens, it’s a signal to reconnect with your team, not a reason to give up.
